What are NPI and DEA numbers?

What are NPI and DEA numbers?

Printed on New Jersey RX prescription pads, you will see an NPI (National Provider Identifier) number which identifies the health care provider in standard transactions. The NPI number is a unique ten digit number that would be needed to file health care claims and to fill prescriptions. Health care providers covered under HIPAA are required to have an NPI number. Health care providers who send electronic health care claims to medical plans must have an NPI number.

Also, you may see printed on New Jersey RX prescription pads, is a DEA number which means the health care provider can write prescriptions for controlled substances. The DEA number is also a unique identifier associated with providers that can prescribe medication.

Here is a quote from http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov

"Construction of Valid DEA Registration Numbers for Practitioners

Knowing how a DEA registration number is constructed can be a useful tool for recognizing a forged prescription. (For additional information regarding forged prescriptions, see Appendix O) Prior to October 1, 1985, DEA registration numbers for physicians, dentists, veterinarians and other practitioners started with the letter A. New registration numbers issued to practitioners after that date begin with the letter B. Registration numbers issued to mid-level practitioners begin with the letter M. The first letter of the registration number is followed by the first letter of the registrant’s last name. (e.g., J for Jones or S for Smith), and then a computer generated sequence of seven numbers (such as MJ3614511)."

Using these 2 numbers, helps to recognize and prevent fraud on NJ RX prescription pads. For more information on how to order NJ RX prescription pads, go to http://www.njprinting.com

Why having doctors produce New Jersey prescription pads helps consumers shop for their medication

Most people don’t think about prescription pads when they are receiving them. They simply take a note from a doctor to a pharmacist, hand over their payment and/or insurance information, and then receive medication. However, the receipt of such pads can actually help patients shop the prices for the medication they need.

So why would New Jersey prescription pads be needed in this age of e-mail and digital communication? The first and most important reason is to help prevent fraud. Controlled substances must be ordered using New Jersey RX pads. Every year, unscrupulous persons try to steal or gain access to controlled substances. They attempt to use fraudulent prescriptions to purchase powerful and addictive painkillers such as Oxycontin, contributing to the problem of prescription drug abuse. By using secure, customized pads and keeping them in a safe place, it is possible for doctors to foil such fraud and theft by having a paper trail of prescriptions.

Another good reason, though, is convenience and accuracy. Doctors in NJ write thousands of prescriptions per year. New Jersey has authorized printers produce templates for health care facilities, optometrists, clinical nurses, medical doctors, dentists, and physician assistants. It is possible for doctors to then fill out prescriptions much more efficiently and helps prevent mistakes. Pharmacists must deliver medication exactly as it is prescribed on the NJ prescription pads, and so any errors made by the doctor invariably gets passed on to the patient.
